Raw Water Field Operations and Pipeline Maintenance Unit (Position Code 0604)

Water Resources Technician I: $7,590.27 – $9,722.27 monthly
Water Resources Technician II: $8,378.93 – $10,731.07 monthly Overview:
The Water Resources Technician I/II performs technical duties in the operation of complex recharge and water distribution systems; operate valves, pumps, canals, turnouts and gates to distribute water to reservoirs, percolation ponds, reclamation systems, channels and recharge facilities; monitors the operations of raw water surface irrigation usage; gauges reservoir inflows and stream flows; ensures operational efficiency and compliance with established State and Federal regulations and performs a variety of technical work relative to assigned area of responsibility.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Operate valves, pumps, canals, turnouts, and gates to distribute water from reservoirs, percolation ponds, reclamation systems, channels, and recharge facilities.
• Monitor the operations of a recycled water system and raw water surface irrigation usage, monitor reservoir inflows and stream flows.
• Read and interpret a variety of gauges, meters, and electronic monitoring devices; collect and analyze data and prepare reports using meteorological and hydrographic devices. Adjust chemical feeding equipment to appropriate levels to ensure appropriate balance and distribution of chemicals.
• Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment.
• Interpret, prepare, maintain, and update a variety of maps, charts, graphs, photographs, records, and reports. Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures. Monitor dam flows, measure and record readings from open wells, piezometers, and weirs. Conduct pre- and post-earthquake or other emergency inspections of dams and related facilities.

Ideal Experience of a Water Resources Technician I:

• 2+ years of water distribution and operations or maintenance experience.
• Related experience can include but is not limited to field maintenance, water distribution operation, water treatment operation, any mechanical work, pipeline maintenance, pump mechanic, ditch tender and sewage treatment operations.

Ideal Experience of a Water Resources Technician II:

• 4+ years of water distribution and operations or maintenance experience.
• Related experience can include but is not limited to field maintenance, water distribution operation, water treatment operation, any mechanical work, pipeline maintenance, pump mechanic, ditch tender and sewage treatment operations.

Ideal Skills and Abilities:
Water Resources Technician I

• Operate water distribution facilities according to Valley Water needs.
• Learn to read and interpret maps, charts, and graphs.
• Learn to apply regulations according to the State Fish and Wildlife, Federal National Marine Fisheries, State Water Quality Control Board, and Valley Water policies.
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in person.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Water Resources Technician II
In addition to the ideal criteria for Water Resources Technician I

• Read and interpret maps, charts, and graphs.
• Apply applicable laws, ordinances, and rules to water distribution operations.
• Apply regulations according to the State Fish and Wildlife, Federal National Marine Fisheries, State Water Quality Control Board, and Valley Water policies.
• Prepare clear and concise records and reports.

Ideal Knowledge:
Water Resources Technician I

• Operations, services, and activities of a raw water distribution system.
• Operational characteristics of water distribution equipment.
• Operational principles of valves, pumps, meters, and other mechanical devices.
• Common desktop applications and software as well as specialized software related to the work.
• Mathematical principles including algebra and trigonometry.

Water Resources Technician II:
In addition to the ideal criteria for Water Resources Technician I

• Methods and techniques of utilizing a variety of measuring devices and recording data.
• State Fish and Wildlife, Federal National Marine Fisheries, State Water Quality Control Board, Valley Water policies.
• Operational characteristics of all Valley Water groundwater recharge facilities.
• Operational characteristics of all Valley Water reservoirs and diversion structures.
• Operations, services, and activities of a raw water distribution system.
• Operational characteristics of water distribution equipment.

Ideal Training and Education:

• Education equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
• Coursework in water resources management coursework, mechanical maintenance, construction technology, engineering technology) is desirable.

Required License or Certificate
