Position Description

East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) has an exciting opportunity for a Superintendent of Water Treatment to lead its Water Treatment section. This position works in tandem with another Superintendent to manage EBMUD’s six water treatment plants, which include in-line and conventional water treatment plants. EBMUD is embarking on a series of major water treatment capital improvement projects which will enable it to meet the water treatment and water quality challenges of the future. The Superintendent will manage day to day operations and provide direction and leadership to the Section, as well as working with engineering and construction staff closely during planning, design and construction of the improvement projects to ensure successful delivery of facilities that meet EBMUD’s objectives in a cost efficient manner.

The Superintendent of Water Treatment plans, schedules, supervises, coordinates, and reviews the operation of EBMUD’s water treatment facilities including managing technical water quality maintenance programs, water system upgrades, system treatments, system troubleshooting, and consumer complaint resolution plans. The ideal candidate will:
• Have solid background in water treatment with a demonstrated record of success in managing water treatment processes and personnel under a variety of conditions.
• Be a team player who can work with other staff across department lines to achieve optimal results.
• Possess experience with large capital improvement projects.
• Have proven leadership skills.
• Be a mentor who can train and develop water treatment supervisors and operators to their fullest capacity.

The salary range is $12,354 per month increasing to $12,972 $13,621 and $14,302 after 6, 18, and 30 months, respectively.

Position Qualifications

1. A bachelor’s degree.*
2a. Three years of experience supervising the operation of treatment facilities of the size, number, and complexity approximating those of EBMUD; OR
2b. Three years of experience as an engineer at a level comparable to EBMUD’s class of Associate Engineer, designing and performing operational or process control studies and preparing technical reports for water treatment facilities. Such experience must have included significant technical, administrative, and supervisory responsibilities.
3. Must possess a valid State Water Resources Control Board Division of Drinking Water certificate as a T4 Operator.
4. Must possess or obtain a valid State Water Resources Control Board Division of Drinking Water certificate as a T5 operator within 24 months of appointment to Superintendent.
5. California driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
6. Possess the physical characteristics to perform the critical and important duties of the class.
