Office of Communications Unit (Position Code 0336) Overview:
Are you an accomplished writer and editor with a track record of producing persuasive public materials? Do you have a passion for video storytelling? If so, check out this opportunity.

The Public Information Representative II (PIR II) is a versatile communicator with expertise in writing, editing, video, website management, and social media. This person will impact communications projects with internal and external customers served by Valley Water, continually seeking to serve the needs of the seven-member board of directors and their distinct constituencies.

The PIR II will shoot and edit video for social media, web and other platforms, public information, and engage in marketing, media and public relations activities. They will write and edit compelling public materials (blogs, newsletters, project collateral, social media posts, etc.) and drive visual/graphic support content ranging from videos, webpage updates, interactive graphic animations, mapping systems, and virtual project site tours. The PIR II assists with news media relations, participating in and arranging media interviews for Valley Water executives and board members. They may also provide support for the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) during emergencies.

In addition to a routine work schedule, this position can involve night and weekend work. Specifically, this position will participate in planned public relations, marketing, outreach, and community engagement events/activities, which may include after-hour commitments at offsite events.

Our ideal candidate is a versatile communicator with expertise in video, writing, editing, and social media. They are creative, a self-starter, able to juggle multiple projects at once, and capable of professionally representing Valley Water to the media, public, and other external stakeholders.

About Valley Water:
Valley Water is the primary water resource agency for Santa Clara County, supplying safe, clean water, providing flood protection, and serving as an environmental steward for healthy ecosystems. Valley Water serves approximately two million people in 15 cities and manages 10 dams and surface water reservoirs, three water treatment plants, a state-of-the-art water quality laboratory, 400 acres of groundwater recharge ponds, and 275 miles of streams.

*Candidates progressing to interviews will be asked to share a portfolio of their work. Additional practical exercises may be part of the interview process.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Develop, shoot, and edit video projects that make an impact.
• Produce video content and provide editing efforts for Valley Water social, web, and other platforms.
• Develop persuasive public written materials and messaging (blogs, newsletters, project collateral, social media posts, etc.).
• Take highly technical information and convert it into communication that is easy to understand to the communities Valley Water serves.
• Assist with news media relations.
• Oversee website content including editing of online project pages.
• Develop and manage the unit’s budget and work plan.

Ideal Experience:

Ideal Knowledge:

• Principles, techniques, and methods of public information, education and volunteer outreach, and community relations.
• Principles and practices of program development and administration.
• Methods and techniques of graphic concepts, design, web and video design, and print production.
• Procedures utilized in preparing information for dissemination through various media.
• Public education strategies, curriculum, and learning processes.
• Principles of budget preparation and administration.
• English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
• Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud Premiere Pro or comparable video editing software programs.

Ideal Training and Education:
Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in English, communications, journalism, public relations, video production, website management, writing, editing, or a related field.

Required License or Certificate
