*Defined-Term Positions are allocated full-time equivalent positions with appointments that are intended to last longer than six months but less than or up to two years. These assignments are not continuing in nature and terminate upon completion of the work, a specified term, decrease in workload such that the position is no longer required or the end of the budget allocation. The current Meter Reader (Defined-Term) position, for which this recruitment is conducted to fill, is anticipated to last two years after the initial hire date. However, if workload decreases such that the position is no longer required, it will be eliminated.
THE POSITION: The Alameda County Water District located in Fremont, California is seeking detail-oriented applicants for the position of Meter Reader. The Meter Reader works independently and is responsible for performing customer service duties in the field reading water meters, recording water consumption, answering customer inquiries, providing information to customers concerning District regulations, initiating and resolving field orders for damaged meters, leaks and unsafe conditions, performing minor maintenance such as replacing meter-box lids and painting/marking curbs, placing door hangers to inform customers of service changes/usage, and turning on and off water service.
This job requires the physical stamina and strength to lift 20-55 lbs. meter covers and, to walk 5 to 8 miles per day in all kinds of weather and varying terrains, bending, kneeling, crouching, crawling and climbing. Also requires excellent communication skills to provide customer service in situations that may be strained and sensitive, and the ability to operate a vehicle skillfully and safely.
High school diploma or its equivalent and two (2) years employment which required substantial day-to-day interaction with other employees and/or the public to provide requested services with accurate attention to detail and adherence to procedures or standards.
Must processes a valid California Driver's License and have a satisfactory driving record.
Top candidates will have experience performing work that required, driving, routing, or independence in the field to schedule their own work, customer service, following and interpreting policies and procedures, data entry into billing, maintenance, or similar applications, and ability to handle physical activity and stamina while preforming all duties outdoors in various types of climate.
