Position Description

The Alameda County Water District is seeking highly capable and motivated candidates to fill two current Utility Worker 1 vacancies. These positions offer great compensation and benefits and excellent stability and career advancement opportunities. Utility Worker 1’s are expected to promote to Utility Worker II ($77,107-$93,729/annually) after three years of District service and to Utility Worker III ($85,670-$104,139/annually) after eight years with the District.
THE POSITION: The Alameda County Water District located in Fremont, CA. The ideal Utility Worker candidate will be motivated, energetic and have experience in labor or construction at a public water agency. This position works as part of a field crew performing varied physical labor and semi-skilled tasks in connection with the construction, maintenance and repair of water system facilities and equipment, including installing and repairing water mains, service lines, fire hydrants and meters.
Utility Worker I is the entry level classification in the Utility Worker series. Under close to general supervision within a framework of established policies and procedures, incumbents perform manual labor requiring a moderate degree of manipulative skill and use of independent judgment and initiative; learn and perform basic construction, installation, maintenance and repair duties relative to the District’s underground water distribution system; and safely operate a variety of mechanical equipment and hand and power tools in support of these activities.
The Utility Worker I, II and III classifications are flexibly staffed. Incumbents in this classification normally advance to a Utility Worker II after three years at entry level and with a performance rating of “meets requirements” overall on their most recent evaluation and demonstrated proficiency in the job requirements of the journey level classification.

Position Qualifications

Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent and six months experience performing heavy manual labor in a construction, maintenance or industrial environment. Must possess a valid California driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record. Must acquire and maintain an unrestricted California Commercial Class A driver’s license within six months of appointment to this classification; must obtain a Grade 1 Water Distribution Operator’s certificate within three years of appointment to this classification. Failure to obtain a Grade 1 Water Distribution Operator’s Certificate within three years will result in termination of employment.
