Position Description

Under general direction, provides leadership and technical guidance for the District’s occupational health and safety program to achieve a world-class District-wide safety culture; develops continual performance improvement strategies; manages effective and compliant safety programs and procedures; provides hazards assessments, risk evaluations, corrective action and improvement recommendations; coaches and mentors staff; and leads safety efforts in support of operations, engineering, office personnel and contractors.

This position is responsible for administering the occupational health and safety program for all employees by being an active and visible proponent of safety, fostering a safety culture that values and respects all contributions, ensuring the District’s compliance with all applicable health and safety regulations, implementing and overseeing the safety training program, assisting work groups in a continuous improvement program of safety performance, and providing management staff, employees and Safety Task Force members with the resources and support necessary to perform their safety functions. This position will act as a catalyst for continuous improvement through development and implementation of proactive measures designed to prevent injuries and illnesses by fostering a culture of respect. This culture of respect will establish goals where personal safety and health is a core value across the organization with achieving world-class safety performance as the ultimate goal.

Position Qualifications

Experience and Training

Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and/or skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and skills could be:

Minimum 7 years’ progressively responsible experience in occupational health and safety technical support services or management work. Possession of a Master’s degree is desirable and may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in industrial safety, occupational health, safety engineering, business or public administration, or a related field.
