Position Description


Under the direction of the Vice President of Operations the Manager of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) plans, organizes, directs and reports on all programs necessary to ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations pertaining to 1) employee safety; 2) workers’ compensation; 3) vehicle safety; 4) occupational health and safety programs; and performs other related work as required to support the timely revision, updating and adoption of these programs throughout the organization. Coordinates assigned activities with other departments, work groups, contractors and outside agencies, as necessary.

Distinguishing Features:
The incumbent is responsible for coordinating and implementing the Company’s environmental health and safety programs. This includes direct management responsibility for the administrative and operational activities of company-wide occupational health and safety programs. Programs include, but are not limited to, facility environmental safety compliance (ex. respiratory protection, confined space qualifications and training); safety compliance training; issuance, maintenance and control of safety and personal protection equipment and material; safety inspections, accident investigations; workplace ergonomics; industrial hygiene surveys (ex. blood borne pathogens, job site hazard assessments), and construction site safety plans. The successful candidate for this position specializes in health and safety compliance.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities:
Manages the Company’s environmental health and safety programs as needed to comply with changes in federal, state and local regulations; develops and implements goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for assigned programs; audits departmental operations for compliance with established environmental, health and safety practices; develops and implements departmental safety training programs; assesses applicability of OSHA requirements and all other applicable health and safety regulations; coordinate and conduct inspections, communications and reporting efforts with regulatory entities; prepare routine reporting on company performance and compliance goals; conducts safety inspections of the Company’s facilities; assists with the Company’s hazardous material and right-to-know programs including the maintenance of Material Safety Data Sheets; schedules and coordinates health and safety training programs and budgets with Human Resources; recommends compliance strategies; performs workplace and job site inspections and audits; ensures contractors and consultants performing work for the company have appropriate EHS programs, training and documentation; and trains operating personnel in required policies and procedures. In addition, the Manager of EHS directs work of the EHS Specialist.

Position Qualifications

Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in industrial hygiene, safety engineering, environmental health, business administration, engineering or a related field. Relevant work experience may be substituted for college degree. Minimum of five years of increasingly responsible experience in workplace health and safety program management and compliance.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of the principles and practices of environmental health and safety program development and administration; federal, state, and local legislation and compliance requirements, including those relevant to health and safety issues related to the General Industry Safety Orders; methodology and principles of implementing a comprehensive health and safety program. In addition, must have strong skills in the following areas:
• Ability to interpret and apply Federal, State, and local policies, laws, and regulations.
• Formulate compliance strategies and develop program implementation plans.
• Clear and concise communication skills, both orally and in writing.
• Maintain effective working relationships with company staff and contractors/consultants.
• Problem analysis, development of alternative solutions, and implement recommendations in support of goals.
• Prepare clear and concise administrative and financial reports.
• Applicable principles in effective leadership, performance/compliance monitoring, communication, innovative training techniques, effective listening, and conflict resolution.
• Use of personal computer and current applications of word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software programs.

Other Requirements:
Must possess a valid California class C driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record.
