Positions & Duties

The Laboratory provides critical analytical services for monitoring operations, compliance, and industrial discharges at the Wastewater Facility; and the support of various studies monitoring water quality issues in the Bay and urban tributaries. Our state-of-the-art facility provides analysis for trace metals, organics, microbiology, toxicological bioassays and other tests for air, soil, and wastewater. The lab operates 365 days a year and processes more than 50,000 samples annually for internal and external customers. The 28-member laboratory team includes chemists, microbiologists, and laboratory technicians.

Laboratory Technician I is the entry level in this classification series. Under immediate supervision, technicians in this class perform standardized qualitative and quantitative physical, chemical, biological and bacteriological analyses of wastewater, industrial waste and related materials. Incumbents in this class normally advance to the Laboratory Technician II class which is involved in the performance of more difficult or complicated analyses and may provide assistance in directing and instructing incumbents of the Laboratory Technician I class. Assignments may be to any shift in and around-

the clock operation, and incumbents must be available for work on weekends and holidays.

Key responsibilities of the Laboratory Technician include:

– Prepares samples for chemical analysis, including pH adjustment, sample homogenization and acid digestion.

– Prepares bacteriological growth media and cleans and sterilizes glassware, equipment, and supplies.

– Performs physical measurements, including pH, temperature, conductivity, salinity, and turbidity.

– Performs routine chemical, biological, and bacteriological analyses of water, wastewater, industrial wastes and related materials, following specific procedures.

– Conducts vertebrate and invertebrate biomonitoring procedures.

– Assists in ordering, receiving, and maintaining an adequate supply of chemicals and related equipment.

– Compiles and records data for a variety of logs, reports, and records, performing calculations as required.

– Maintains clean and organized work areas, equipment, and devices

– Inspects screening equipment, sampling equipment and collects varied wastewater samples from specific locations.

– May assist in sample collection programs for special or short term projects.

– May need to lift 50 lbs sample containers

Position Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Two (2) years of college chemistry or related field, with a minimum of 20 semester units in chemistry.

Experience:

Lab Technician I - None

Lab Technician II - One (1) year of experience equivalent to a Laboratory Technician I with the City of San Jose.
