Position Description

The Vallejo Flood and Wastewater District invites applications for a LABORATORY TECHNICIAN I/II. The final filing date is November 27, 2017.

The District is seeking a Laboratory Technician I /II to perform tests to assist in the control of the wastewater treatment plant under general supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor. The Laboratory Technician I procures and analyzes the effluent produced in order to determine if it meets prescribed requirements; keeps records and assists in the preparation of reports; enters data on a computer; and performs related responsible work as required. The Laboratory Tech II procures and analyzes the treatment plant influent, effluent, and sludge to determine compliance with prescribed requirements; keeps records; enters data on a computer, and performs other related responsible work as required.

Position Qualifications

Knowledge of English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation; modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment; basic principles of record keeping.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; work with others and accept direction; prepare clear, complete and technically accurate data summaries and reports; to communicate with irate or difficult people; and to accept constructive criticism from supervisor, coworkers, subordinate employees.
In addition, the Laboratory Technician II must have the ability to generate reliable results and perform routine QA/QC procedures; communicate effectively with others and represent the District at public events.
The Laboratory Technician II must have a strong background in applied chemistry and math; have general knowledge of the wastewater treatment process; and be familiar with computer spreadsheets, databases, and word processing programs.

Education and Experience: Completion of college level courses in the physical or biological sciences field equivalent to an A.S. degree and two (2) years of experience. Experience may be substituted for education on a one (1) year of experience for one year of education basis up to a maximum of one (1) year. Experience must be in a laboratory performing tests similar to those described herein.

License(s): Laboratory Technician I must obtain a California Water Environment Association Grade I Laboratory Analyst certificate within one year from the date of hire.

Laboratory Technician II must possess a current California Water Environment Association certificate as a Grade II Laboratory Analyst at the time of employment.

Must possess a valid California Class C Driver’s License at the time of employment. The ability to drive District vehicles is a specific requirement for this position. For that reason, it is the employee’s responsibility to maintain a driving record that is acceptable to the District’s insurance carrier or be subject to dismissal.
