Position Description

East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) invites candidates who have the appropriate qualifications to apply for this intern position (part-time – 19 hours per week, when school is in session OR temporary full time – 40 hours per week for up to 6 months on school breaks) in the Water Resource Projects Section of the Water & Natural Resources Department. The Water Resource Projects Section has a primary role to ensure that EBMUD complies with its federal hydropower license, which includes implementing its dam safety program components. Technical and non-technical project activities of the Section involve background research and report writing, data analysis, interpreting and creating maps/figures and schematics, developing policies, and collaborating in teams to evaluate issues at EBMUD’s dam and reservoir sites and to develop solutions.

The Engineering Aide will assist civil engineers in the Section by performing the following typical tasks:
• Dam Safety research support in matters related to regulatory requests, which includes performing searches, retrieval, and review of past correspondence and agreements with the Department of Water Resources and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), relevant technical studies/documents, and compiling analysis results or findings;
• Dam Safety Training Academy support, which includes the development of new curriculum and maintenance of some of the twenty-one training modules covering technical and non-technical (project management) content;
• Regulatory requirement compliance, which includes supporting the implementation of dam safety related recommendations for EBMUD’s dams.

The ideal candidate will have:
• Excellent command of spoken and written English
• A semester or more of geotechnical engineering coursework
• A semester or more of water resources related coursework

Co-op applicants are highly desired.

NOTE: This internship opportunity is not a regular civil service position.

Position Qualifications

1. Junior or Senior Engineering student currently enrolled at an accredited college or university with interest in civil and/or environmental engineering
2. Valid California driver's license and satisfactory driving record
3. US citizen or have proof of the legal right to remain and work in the United States
