Position Description

Assistant Engineers (Electrical) perform a variety of professional electrical engineering assignments in connection with the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of a large municipal water and wastewater utility. The current opening is for East Bay Municipal Utility District’s (EBMUD’s) Wastewater Engineering Division in the Electrical and Controls Section. The Wastewater Department owns and operates the nation’s first municipal wastewater plant that is a net-energy producer with a 10.5 megawatt, biogas-fueled, power generation station. The wastewater treatment plant treats on average over 60 million gallons per day, helping to protect the San Francisco Bay. The Wastewater Department also produces approximately 8 million gallons per day of recycled water for reuse, with treatment facilities including reverse osmosis membrane technology.

The Assistant Engineer (Electrical) job classification is the second level position in the engineering series, which may include direction of lower level engineers or technical staff in various project areas. Assignments are under the direct supervision of registered electrical engineers and provide qualifying experience for registration.

The ideal candidate will have electrical and control system experience for large industrial or municipal water, wastewater, and power generation facilities. The ideal candidate will also have direct design experience in low voltage and medium voltage applications and preparing: schematics, conduit schedules, interconnection, one-line, process, and instrumentation diagrams; switchgear, transformer, MCC (Motor Control Center), VFD (variable frequency drives) design, and panel board layout design; arc flash assessments, short circuit and electrical coordination studies; control systems with PLC (Programmable Logic Controller), DCS (Distributed Control System), RTU (Remote Telemetry Unit), SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition), and HMI (Human Machine Interface) programming; fiber optic, telemetry, and wireless communications systems.

The salary range is $8,856 per month increasing to $9,299, $9,764, $10,252, and $10,765 after 6, 18, 30, and 42 months, respectively.

Position Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience that has led to the acquisition of the knowledge and abilities indicated above. Typical means of acquiring the essential knowledge and abilities is a combination of training and experience equivalent to:

1. A bachelor’s degree in an ABET-accredited electrical engineering curriculum OR a California EIT Certificate.
2. Two years of electrical engineering experience (subsequent to obtaining the degree) at a level comparable to or higher than EBMUD’s Junior Engineer classification. An advanced degree in an accredited electrical engineering curriculum may be substituted for one of the required years of experience.

Must possess the physical characteristics needed to perform the critical and important duties of the position, and be willing to work overtime as needed. Must possess a valid California driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record.
