Position Description

East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD), one of nation’s largest independent water and wastewater utility, invites qualified professionals to apply for the position of The Assistant Engineer (Corrosion). The incumbent of this position performs corrosion protection engineering studies, designs rehabilitation drawings, supports construction projects, and provides expertise and support to EBMUD work groups in designing and implementing corrosion control methods to aqueduct and pipeline infrastructure and related water system facilities. Responsibilities and duties include:
• Analyzing technical and other data, then making recommendations based on data.
• Designing, developing, preparing and presenting plans and reports on alternative approaches and recommendations for implementing corrosion control mitigation measures to protect pipeline and related water system infrastructure.
• Designing, planning, developing, and coordinating specific corrosion control and coating projects.
• Preparing and reviewing analyses and work products developed by project team members.
• Communicating with other work groups, client contacts, and other agency representatives.
• Consulting and assisting other work groups in the research, design and evaluation of corrosion control alternatives.
• Performing corrosion control design reviews for pipelines, reservoirs, pumping plants, and other major infrastructure improvement projects.
• Designing, testing, implementing, overseeing and performing startup and adjustments for specialized cathodic protection systems for a wide variety of infrastructure and facilities, including galvanic anodes, deep-well anodes, and impressed current systems.
• Preparing draft technical specifications for corrosion control-related civil construction installation and equipment purchases.
• Acting as an EBMUD representative to other agencies regarding the design, operation, permitting, and installation of cathodic protection anode wells and other corrosion control systems.
• Ensuring that projects and final documents address EBMUD’s regulatory requirements.
• Researching and reviewing industry literature for updates and other information.

The most competitive candidates will have previous civil corrosion control or related experience; knowledge of construction methods and materials; the ability to apply engineering principles to the solution of corrosion control problems; the ability to conduct engineering studies and evaluations of corrosion control issues; knowledge of engineering economics; and experience evaluating ongoing corrosion control functions and operations and developing plans to improve their effectiveness and efficiency.

The salary range is $8,856 per month increasing to $9,299, $9,764, $10,252 and $10,765 after 6, 18, 30, and 42 months, respectively.

Position Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience that has led to the acquisition of the knowledge and abilities indicated above. Typical means of acquiring the essential knowledge and abilities is a combination of training and experience equivalent to:

1. A bachelor’s degree in an ABET-accredited engineering curriculum in civil/mechanical/electrical/chemical or a closely related field, or a California EIT Certificate; and
2. Two years of civil/mechanical/electrical/chemical engineering experience or closely related engineering field experience at EBMUD’s Junior Engineer level or higher.
3. Must possess the physical characteristics to perform the critical and important duties of the position, and be willing to work overtime as needed.
4. A valid California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record are also required.
